YAW OBRENU YAMOAHYAW

Bio

Yaw Obrenu Yamoah is a emerging director based out of Vancouver BC. Upon immigrating from Ghana, Yaw has pushed in areas of design, film, and art. His work as a creative director and a stylist allowed him to create his own brand. Which later opened up doors to working on a few independent films.
Yaw’s directorial debut, the critically acclaimed short film Caroline, is a reflective piece set in the 1960s that poignantly addresses the question of who we are allowed to love. Funded by a grant from the British Columbia Arts Council, Caroline has garnered international attention, being selected for the Toronto Indie Film Festival, the Geneve Awards, and receiving a Merit Award from the Best Shorts Competition. Its acclaim further extended to an invitation to the prestigious Golden Ribbon International Film Festival, culminating in a highly coveted invitation from the Tribeca Film Festival.
In his continued pursuit of storytelling excellence, Yaw was recently awarded a grant by the Canada Council for the Arts to develop his upcoming feature film, Kid. This project represents a significant step forward in his career, promising to bring his unique vision and depth of storytelling to a broader canvas.
Yaw’s filmography is expanding, with the release of his second film, Heroes, and the anticipated festival circuit debut of his third short film, Sisters, filmed on 16mm.
Sisters is expected to showcase Yaw’s growing mastery of the medium and his commitment to exploring diverse narratives and filmic textures.
